Music at St John’s

Music is at the heart of life at St John’s. From the sound of our bells ringing out across Danbury to the choir leading our Sunday worship, music brings our church to life and helps make special moments truly memorable.

Whether you love singing, enjoy listening, or are curious about getting involved, there’s plenty to discover.

Our Choir

Our choir, led by Director of Music and Organist Paul Hagger, brings together people who share a love of music, friendship and worship.

From our regular Sunday services to the great celebrations of Christmas and Easter, our Patronal Festival in June and other special occasions throughout the year, the choir helps create something special for our church and community.

But being part of the choir is about more than singing. It’s about making friends, having fun, learning together and sharing in the life of St John’s.

Love to sing? We’d love to hear from you! Whether you’re an experienced singer or simply enjoy singing with others, why not get in touch to find out more about joining us?

The St John’s Festival Choir

Fancy singing for a special occasion? The St John’s Festival Choir brings together our regular choir with additional singers from the parish and beyond.

The Festival Choir is a wonderful way to get involved without making a regular commitment. Singers join us for particular events throughout the year, especially our Christmas Carol Service and joyful Easter Day celebrations. We also hold Come and Sing workshops, giving people the chance to enjoy making music together.

Everyone interested in singing is welcome to get involved. Contact our Director of Music, Paul Hagger, and he’ll let you know about upcoming events and rehearsal arrangements, so you can decide which occasions you’d like to take part in.

Friday Lunchtime Concerts

Music at St John’s is something we love to share with the whole community. On the second Friday of each month, we welcome talented musicians and performers to our beautiful church for a relaxed lunchtime concert.

Running from 12.15pm to 1pm, the concerts are a lovely opportunity to enjoy live music in the peaceful and historic surroundings of St John’s.

Why not make a morning of it? From 11.45am, we serve a selection of homemade sandwiches, delicious cakes and drinks, making it a perfect chance to enjoy some lunch, meet friends and take a little time out of your day.

Whether you're a regular concert-goer or simply fancy trying something different, everyone is welcome. We look forward to seeing you!

Eight Bells and a Tower Full of Tradition

Music at St John’s isn’t just about singing. Our church tower is home to eight bells, rung by a dedicated and experienced team of bellringers.

You can hear the bells on Sunday mornings and for special occasions throughout the year, with practice sessions on Wednesday evenings.

Bellringing is a fascinating tradition that combines teamwork, concentration and skill. If you’ve ever wondered how it all works, why not find out more about this important part of our church’s life?

More Than Music

Being part of the choir means being part of a community. Alongside rehearsals and services, there are plenty of opportunities to get together and enjoy ourselves.

Our choir social events have included a summer barbecue and a November fireworks night, welcoming friends and members of the wider congregation. We also host Not the Last Knight of the Proms, our own spirited take on the Last Night of the Proms, held every other year in September to raise funds for the church and enjoy an evening of music, drama and celebration.

Whether we’re singing, ringing, rehearsing or simply spending time together, music gives us another way to connect with one another and share in the life of St John’s.

Come and Join Us!

Our choir rehearses on Thursday mornings and is always pleased to welcome new singers. You don’t need to be a professional or have years of experience — just a love of singing and a willingness to give it a go.

If you’d like to join the choir, sing with the Festival Choir, find out about bellringing or simply learn more about music at St John’s, we’d love to hear from you.
