Parish Church of St John the Baptist, Danbury

Music at the Church

St John's has a strong musical tradition and is proud of its Music Department, led by Director of Music and Organist Paul Hagger.

The choir of adults and children leads our worship at most services. It undertakes challenging musical programmes to enrich our Christmas and Easter celebrations, our Patronal Festival in June, and other special occasions throughout the year.

Do you like to sing? Then why not join the choir?

The St John's Singers

For certain special occasions and services during the year, the parish choir is joined by additional singers from the parish and beyond. This enlarged choir is called the St John's Singers, and features particularly in the Festival of Lessons and Carols at Christmas and our joyful service on Easter Day.

Any singer who is interested can join the choir for these special events. Please speak to the Director of Music (details below) and he will ensure that information about the events and the times of rehearsals are sent to you in good time so that you can decide whether to join in for a particular occasion.

 The Choir

Singing in the choir is not just about the pleasure of singing and the love of music. It's about friendship and fun! Not least, it's about worshipping God.

The choir plays a crucial role in supporting the clergy and helping to lead worship. This applies not just at major festivals, such as the Christmas-time Festival of Lessons & Carols, on Easter Day and at our Patronal Festival in June, but also Sunday by Sunday throughout the church year. We are particularly pleased to see some of our younger members back in the chancel when they return home during university vacations - evidence that the love of the church and church music, and habits of worship developed in the choir, have a lasting effect.

And it's not all church services! The choir knows how to enjoy itself with regular social and musical events! The summer barbecue and November fireworks night are not to be missed, all members of the congregation past, present and future are welcome. A popular (and now traditional) choir-led event for the whole congregation is 'Not the Last Knight of the Proms'. A strong rival to the 'other' Last Night in drama and celebration, this event is held in alternate years in September to raise funds for the Church (and enable us all to let our hair down!)

The choir rehearses on Friday evenings from 7.15pm until 8:30pm and is always ready to welcome new singers. Please see the contact details below and be in touch if you are interested in joining.
